Immunopathogenic mechanisms of HIV infection.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) follows infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after a long and variable period of time. Although HIV can be rapidly cytopathic in vitro for T4 cells, during early in vivo infection, T4 cell numbers are normal and few infected T4 cells can be found. There is increasing evidence that cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage, including ...

Effect of Fluvoxamine on Cytokine Level of COVID-19 Patients Hospitalized in ICU

Background: In reviewing the laboratory studies on humans and animals, we observe that use of certain drugs with specified applications inhibit the immune reactions in the body. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are among these drugs. The goal of the current research is evaluating the effectiveness of one kind of SSRIs namely fluvoxamine on the cytokine level of COVID-19 patients....

Unexpected mechanisms of action for a cytokine receptor-blocking antibody

CSL362 is a humanized interleukin-3 (IL-3)-neutralizing monoclonal antibody with enhanced effector function that binds the α subunit of the IL-3 receptor (IL3Rα). The crystal structure of an IL3Rα:CSL362 complex shows that IL3Rα adopts "open" and "closed" conformations. CSL362 blocks IL-3 function through both IL3Rα conformations but via distinct and unexpected mechanisms.
