چکیده
This study provides a global assessment of the abundance major oxides in deep continental crust. The combination geochemistry and seismology better constrains composition middle lower crust than either discipline can achieve alone. inaccessible nature (typically >15 km) forces reliance on analog samples modeling results to interpret its bulk composition, evolution, physical properties. A common practice relates oxide compositions small- medium-scale (e.g., medium high metamorphic grade terrains xenoliths) large scale measurements seismic velocities (Vp, Vs, Vp/Vs) determine We provide framework for building crustal models with multidisciplinary constraints composition. present model that documents compositional changes depth accounts uncertainties Moho depth, temperature, chemical Our 3D uses USGS Global Seismic Structure Catalog (Mooney, 2015) compilation geochemical analyses amphibolite granulite facies lithologies (Sammon & McDonough, 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JB022791). find SiO2 gradient from 61.2 ± 7.3 53.3 4.8 wt.% base crust, equivalent lithological ranging quartz monzonite gabbronorite. Permeability of the continental crust: dynamic variations inferred from seismicity and metamorphism
The variation of permeability with depth can be probed indirectly by various means, including hydrologic models that use geothermal data as constraints and the progress of metamorphic reactions driven by fluid flow. Geothermal and metamorphic data combine to indicate that mean permeability (k) of tectonically active continental crust decreases with depth (z) according to log k ! )14–3.2 log z, ...

When the Continental Crust Melts
The continental crust is 41.4 km thick on average and covers 39% of the Earth’s surface. Information from the isotopic and trace element composition of >4-billion-yearold (Ga) zircon grains and the evolution of mantle isotopic reservoirs indicates that 75%, and possibly more, of the continental crust was created before 2.5 Ga (Harrison 2009; Belousova et al. 2010). Thus, the continental crust i...
متن کاملGeophysical and geochemical constraints on geoneutrino fluxes from Earth's mantle
Knowledge of the amount and distribution of radiogenic heating in the mantle is crucial for understanding the dynamics of the Earth, including its thermal evolution, the style and planform of mantle convection, and the energetics of the core. Although the flux of heat from the surface of the planet is robustly estimated, the contributions of radiogenic heating and secular cooling remain poorly ...
