COMPLICATIONS OF ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS: A REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE

Background: Despite the technological advances zygomatic implants (ZI) and its proven success, this rehabilitation option is sensitive, not a routine in dental practice, requiring technical mastery, surgical experience, in-depth anatomical knowledge, which makes it quite susceptible to complications. In addition, little discussed about these disorders, whether immediate or late, although they are essential knowledge for surgeons who perform procedure. Aim: The objective of study was answer question through literature review: "Are there complications implants?" As well as argue main intercurrences found. Material Methods: review conducted on PubMed/Medline, Cochrane SciELO using descriptors: “Complications” “Failure” “Zygomatic Implants”. included articles were observational studies that related ZI initial research identified 448 articles, but 42 them mentioned associated with considered study. Results: most common complication sinusitis followed by peri-implantitis, problems prosthetic connection, fistula towards implant, paresthesia, hematoma, lip laceration, ecchymosis, penetration orbital cavity, aspergillosis, intracranial penetration, intraorbital hemorrhage. 44 out 2835 ZIs placed late loading lost (1.5%).
