Compartment syndrome due to extravasation of peripheral parenteral nutrition: extravasation injury of parenteral nutrition
Compartment syndrome is a rare but devastating condition that can result in permanent neuromuscular or soft tissue injuries. Extravasation injuries, among the iatrogenic causes of compartment syndrome, occur under a wide variety of circumstances in the inpatient setting. Total parenteral nutrition via a peripheral route is an effective alternative for the management of critically ill children w...
متن کاملExtravasation of parenteral nutrition in the neck: A case report
Extravasation refers to the process by which substances (including fluids or medications) escape into the extravascular space, either by leakage from a vessel into surrounding tissue or by direct infiltration [1-4]. This may occur through the administration of fluids via central venous catheters (CVC) or peripheral lines [3]. Extravasates are broadly divided into irritants or vesicants, based o...
متن کاملIntra-abdominal extravasation complicating parenteral nutrition in infants.
Two infants receiving total parenteral nutrition via a central venous catheter positioned in the inferior vena cava developed an acute abdomen secondary to extravasation of the infusate. The presence of an associated abdominal mass necessitated a laparotomy in one patient. Both infants recovered completely after the catheter had been removed.
متن کاملPeripheral Parenteral Nutrition
Access for parenteral nutrition is generally obtained by placement of a central ve n o u s catheter. Cannulation of the subclavian, internal jugular, or femoral veins with advancement of the catheter tip into the superior or inferior vena cava ach i eves central venous access. Catheter tip placement elsewhere than the vena cava is considered peripheral access. Based on catheter tip location, th...
متن کاملTerm Neonate With Liver Laceration, Obstructive Uropathy, and Ascites—Secondary to Extravasation of Total Parenteral Nutrition
We report a rare, but serious, complication of a malpositioned umbilical venous catheter in a term male infant who developed laceration, hematoma, and necrosis of liver, ascites, and left-sided obstructive uropathy secondary to extravasation of total parenteral nutrition. Abdominal paracentesis confirmed the presence of parenteral nutrition in the peritoneal cavity. Although, the umbilical veno...
