چکیده

Abstract In this study, a hybrid En3DVar data assimilation (DA) scheme is compared with 3DVar, EnKF, and pure for the of radar in real tornadic storm case. Results using hydrometeor mixing ratios (CVq) or logarithmic (CVlogq) as control variables are variational DA framework. To address lack radial velocity impact issues when CVq, procedure that assimilates reflectivity two separate analysis passes adopted. Comparisons made terms root-mean-square innovations (RMSIs) well intensity structure analyzed forecast storms. For uses 100% ensemble covariance, CVlogq CVq have similar RMSIs analyses, but errors grow faster during forecasts CVlogq. Introducing static background error covariance at 5% (with CVlogq) significantly reduces growth. Pure produces more intense analyses than EnKF closely match observations. Hybrid 50% outperforms other weights updraft helicity thus used final comparison 3DVar EnKF. The found to outperform better capturing storms 3DVAR evolution rotating updraft.

OBSERVATIONS OF THE 10 MAY 2010 TORNADO OUTBREAK USING OU-PRIME Potential for New Science with High-Resolution Polarimetric Radar

S ince the early 1970s, Doppler radar has been used as the primary tool in advancing our knowledge of the kinematics and dynamics of severe convective storms. In particular, a pair of fixed-site, S-band Doppler radars in central Oklahoma was used by the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman for a number of years. Based on singleand dualDoppler data collected by the serendipitous ne...

Many studies have been performed during the past decade aiming to use Doppler radar data for initializing cloud-resolving models. Assimilation of Radar Radial Velocity Data with the WRF Hybrid Ensemble–3DVAR System for the Prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008)

An enhanced version of the hybrid ensemble–three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) system for the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) is applied to the assimilation of radial velocity (Vr) data from two coastal Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radars for the prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008) before and during its landfall. In this hybrid system, flow-d...

Assimilation of Radar Radial Velocity Data with the WRF Ensemble- 3DVAR Hybrid System for the Prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008)

An enhanced version of the hybrid ensemble-3DVAR data assimilation system for the WRF model is applied to the assimilation of radial velocity (Vr) data from two coastal WSR-88D radars for the prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008) before and during its landfall. In this hybrid system, flow-dependent ensemble covariance is incorporated into the varitional cost function using the extended control var...

Numerical Prediction of 8 May 2003 Oklahoma City Tornadic Supercell and Embedded Tornado using ARPS with the Assimilation of WSR-88D Radar Data

The 8 May 2003 Oklahoma City tornadic supercell is predicted with the ARPS model using four nested grids with 9-km, 1-km, 100-m, and 50-m grid spacings. The Oklahoma City WSR-88D radar radial velocity and reflectivity data are assimilated through the ARPS 3DVAR and cloud analysis on the 1-km grid to generate an initial condition that includes a well-analyzed supercell and associated low-level m...
