چکیده

Comparison study of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and hybrid RANS-LES models is carried out for predicting the performance three-straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine operating within tip speed ratios (TSRs) ranges (1.44–3.3). The evaluation focused on power coefficient, moment coefficient vortex structure generation, growth transportation predictions. It was found that URANS turbulence modelling sufficient averaged prediction specific range TSR evaluation, it also benefits from short simulation run time. To further evaluate flow field details to understand underlying physics such as dynamic stall behaviour, necessary. Comparing between adopted, stress-blended eddy based transition shear-stress transport (TSST) model has achieved an overall better performance, a reduction discrepancy by 50% in low TSRs compared TSST model. In both medium high ranges, discrepancies are less than 3% at about 25% extra computational Furthermore, range, able predict appearance shedding azimuthal angles (? ? 180°) which failed capture.

Airfoil Design for Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Operating at Variable Tip Speed Ratios

A new airfoil design method for H type vertical axis wind turbine is introduced in the present study. A novel indicator is defined to evaluate vertical axis wind turbine aerodynamic performance at variable tip speed ratios and selected as the airfoil design objective. A mathematic model describing the relationship between airfoil design variables and objective is presented for direct airfoil de...

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Case Study

This case study investigates the generator of a large offshore Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). In particular this case study focuses on the effect of the inherent cyclic torque loading of the VAWT on the generator in terms of the costs and losses experienced. A spectrum of torque control strategies were created based on the ratio q of the allowed electrical torque variation to the mechanical...

Unsteady aerodynamic performance of Dual-Row H-Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine

H-rotor Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) is one of the most efficient energy suppliers which have been investigated in many recent types of research. The aim of this work is to study the aerodynamic performance of a doubled-row H-Darrieus VAWT. First, an ordinary three-bladed VAWT with NACA4415 profile is simulated by means of 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and results are compared to a...
