Comparison of patterns of obstetric fistula between two periods in South-East Nigeria

Obstetric fistula continues to be a reproductive health problem among women in low- and middle-income countries. The study aimed compare the demographics, aetiology, presentation, management of patients seen at two different periods. It was retrospective comparative cross-sectional managed 2015 2020 National Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, South-East Nigeria. A total sampling all who had obstetric repair within periods done. Medical records were obtained. Data analysed using SPSS version 21. Numerical variables compared with student’s t-test while categorical Chi-square test. p-value less than 0.05 considered significant. 229 fistula, 143 86 2020. mean ages treated 35.3±10.8 years 35.0±11.8 respectively (P=0.333). In 2015, commonest cause prolonged obstructed labour 2020, it Caesarean section (60.3% vs 43.0%, P<0.001). Stillbirth commoner (65.4%) fetal outcome as against live birth (65.4% 54.4%, P=0.004). Abdominal approach increased from 4.2% procedures 11.6% (P=0.033). There no change socio-demographic characteristics is now aetiology fistula. Most babies survive antecedent pregnancy abdominal repairs on increase.
