Comparison of annual maximum and peaks-over-threshold methods with automated threshold selection in flood frequency analysis: a case study for Australia

چکیده

Flood frequency analysis (FFA) involves fitting of a probability distribution to observed flood data. Two main models, annual maximum (AM) and peaks over threshold (POT), are generally adopted in FFA. The POT model is underemployed due its complexity uncertainty associated with selection meeting independence criteria selecting data series. This study evaluates the AM models using from 188 gauged stations southeast Australia. this applies different average numbers events per year fitted generalized Pareto (GP) an automated detection method. For model, GP also adopted, quantiles estimated by two compared. It has been found that there notable differences design estimates between models. uses catchment characteristics understand quantile percentage can be explained mean rainfall (MAR) evapotranspiration (MAE) (ARIs 1.01–5 years), MAR (10-year ARI), stream density (SDEN) (for 20- 50-year ARIs) SDEN, slope (S1085) MAE 100-year ARI). Stations showing smaller % have relatively higher (indicating wetter condition); conversely, (drier condition).

Model Misspecification in Peaks over Threshold Analysis

Classical peaks over threshold analysis is widely used for statistical modeling of sample extremes, and can be supplemented by a model for the sizes of clusters of exceedances. Under mild conditions a compound Poisson process model allows the estimation of the marginal distribution of threshold exceedances and of the mean cluster size, but requires the choice of a threshold and of a run paramet...

trend analysis of annual threshold heavy precipitation over iran

abstract in this study, trends of threshold heavy precipitation were examined on the basis of measurements of 1437 stations (included synoptic, climatic and rain gage stations) in iran for the period of 40 years (1964-2003). for this purpose, the statistical method of nonparametric mann-kendall test is used for analyzinging the thresholds of heavy precipitation and nonparametric sen method for ...

Statistical models for overdispersion in the frequency of peaks over threshold data for a flow series

[1] In a peaks over threshold analysis of a series of river flows, a sufficiently high threshold is used to extract the peaks of independent flood events. This paper reviews existing, and proposes new, statistical models for both the annual counts of such events and the process of event peak times. The most common existing model for the process of event times is a homogeneous Poisson process. T...

Wavelet Shrinkage via Peaks over Threshold

Wavelet shrinkage is a non parametric technique used in curve estimation. The idea is to shrink wavelet coefficients towards zero using statistical methods. More specifically, a threshold value is chosen and wavelet coefficients whose absolute values exceed that threshold are kept while others are removed. This has the effect of both reducing the noise contribution and compressing the original ...
