Comparing the cognate effect in spoken and written second language word production

چکیده
Abstract Cognates – words that share form and meaning between languages are processed faster than control words. However, is this facilitation effect merely lexical in nature or does it cascade to phonological/orthographic (i.e., sub-lexical) processes? This study compared cognate effects spoken typewritten production, which lexical, but not sub-lexical processes. Dutch–English bilinguals produced English names for pictures representing cognates either the modality. Onset latencies were shorter accuracy was higher vs. similar both modalities. Compared controls, total written modality with much cross-linguistic overlap, longer ones less overlap. Additionally, error analysis showed more affected by L1 interference controls. These results suggest two different effects: one at level.

Prosodic Parallelism—Comparing Spoken and Written Language
The Prosodic Parallelism hypothesis claims adjacent prosodic categories to prefer identical branching of internal adjacent constituents. According to Wiese and Speyer (2015), this preference implies feet contained in the same phonological phrase to display either binary or unary branching, but not different types of branching. The seemingly free schwa-zero alternations at the end of some words ...
متن کاملSyllable structure affects second-language spoken word recognition and production
In this study, we show that second-language (L2) spoken-word recognition is greatly influenced by syllable-structure differences between the native language (L1) and the second language (L2), and that L2 word-recognition accuracy is a reliable predictor of L2 word-production accuracy. Spanish-speaking English learners (experimental group) completed a listening task in which they monitored /(ǝ)s...
متن کاملComparing Syllable Frequencies in Corpora of Written and Spoken Language
In this study, various German language corpora were compared in order to discover the extent to which syllable frequencies remain stable across different contexts and modalities. Although considerable differences in relative frequency were found among the more common syllables, rank numbers proved to be more robust. Variation across corpora was mostly due to vocabulary characteristics of partic...
متن کاملNeural stages of spoken, written, and signed word processing in beginning second language learners
WE COMBINED MAGNETOENCEPHALOGRAPHY (MEG) AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) TO EXAMINE HOW SENSORY MODALITY, LANGUAGE TYPE, AND LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY INTERACT DURING TWO FUNDAMENTAL STAGES OF WORD PROCESSING: (1) an early word encoding stage, and (2) a later supramodal lexico-semantic stage. Adult native English speakers who were learning American Sign Language (ASL) performed a semantic task ...
متن کاملthe role of thematic structure in comprehending spoken language
in fact this study is concerned with the relationship between the variation in thematice structure and the comprehension of spoken language. so the study focused on the following questions: 1. is there any relationship between thematic structure and the comprehension of spoken language? 2. which of the themes would have greated thematic force and be easier for the subjects to comprehend? accord...
