Comparing pyrometry and thermography in ballistic impact experiments

Thermal analyses of projectile impact and subsequent combustion are investigated for aluminum projectiles using a high-velocity ignition system. Temperature measurements compared pyrometry thermography. The implementation these techniques is discussed, as well their benefits limitations in ballistic experiments. Results show best measuring temperatures the immediate vicinity surrounding location, while thermography better quantifies temperature dissipation downstream from combusting debris cloud disperses. Temperatures comparable to predicted adiabatic flame observed with pyrometer. For thermography, emphasis placed on treatment emissivity calculations. Three stages identified data attributed 1) growth front, 2) thermal due initial particle burnout, 3) slower stage caused by reduced heat exchange between burning surroundings.
