Comparing Advanced Control Strategies to Eliminate Stick-Slip Oscillations in Drillstrings

In this paper, we present three methods to achieve reliable drillbit angular velocity control for deep drilling operations. We consider a multi-sectional system with the bit off-bottom, which represents at start-up of operation, e.g., after connection. The procedures are all based on distributed model system. proposed has been field validated and considers Coulomb friction between drillstring borehole. first algorithm propose combines industry standard ZTorque controller feedforward component. second procedure is multiplicity-induced-dominancy (MID) design that corresponds pole-placement downhole state. Finally, last class controllers relies recursive interconnected dynamics framework. All combined disturbance rejection whose switching-mode approach. These algorithms illustrated in simulations scenarios several test-cases. Their complexities, effectiveness limitations regarding industrial implementation criteria discussed.
