چکیده
The objective of this paper was to quantify and compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative designs typical North American low mid-rise buildings. Two scenarios were considered: a traditional structural steel frame or an all-wood mass timber design, utilizing engineered wood products for both gravity lateral load resistance. boundary quantitative analysis cradle-to-grave considerations taken discuss end-of-life material reuse scenarios. TRACI methodology followed conduct Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) that translates building quantities impact indicators using Athena Estimator Buildings software tool Athena’s Inventory database. results show buildings have advantage respect several categories, including eutrophication potential, human health particulate, global warming potential where 31% 41% reduction found from designs, neglecting carbon sequestration benefits products. However, it also lower categories smog acidification ozone depletion 48% 58% designs.

One of the main tasks of engineers is to design structural systems light and economic as possible, yet resistant enough to withstand all possible loads arising during their service life and to absorb the induced seismic energy in a controlled and predictable fashion. The traditional trial-and-error design approach is not capable to determine an economical design satisfying also the code require...
متن کاملAssessing Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as an Alternative Material for Mid-Rise Residential Buildings in Cold Regions in China—A Life-Cycle Assessment Approach
Timber building has gained more and more attention worldwide due to it being a generic renewable material and having low environmental impact. It is widely accepted that the use of timber may be able to reduce the embodied energy of a building. However, the development of timber buildings in China is not as rapid as in some other countries. This may be because of the limitations of building reg...
متن کاملLife Cycle Assessment for Buildings
The work presents the results of some case studies oriented toward the investigation of the potential of Life Cycle Assessment evaluations in the area of environmental impacts related to the life cycle of buildings. In particular, the aspects connected with the performance behavior of building components (and of the entire building organisms) are dealt, in relation to users’ needs which are cha...
متن کامل'Cradle-to-grave' assessment of existing lignocellulose pretreatment technologies.
Pretreatment is considered to be a central unit process in a biorefinery to convert lignocellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals, affecting all other operations in the process. A variety of technologies to pretreat lignocellulosic biomass are available today, which encompass a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological based processes. Among these, chemical based pretreatments are con...
