Comparative Biochemistry of Hemoglobins

In the course of the study on the hemoglobin contained in newborn bovine blood, two major and five minor components which are specific to newborn bovine hemoglobin were detected by the methods of agar-gel electrophoresis, cellulose-acetate membrane electrophoresis and column chromatography. These components were examined on their alkaline resistance , and the results showed that all the compone...

Comparative biochemistry of keratosulfates.

Keratosulfate was first isolated from bovine cornea in 1953 by Meyer et al. (2) and its repeating unit structure determined to be (1 3 3)P-n-galactopyranosyl-(1 + 4)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-Po-glucopyranosyl 6-sulfate (3). This compound was later reported present also in human cartilage (4) and in nucleus pulposus (5). u-Glucosamine was characterized as the hydrochloride and n-galactose as the or-m...

Comparative Biochemistry of Hepatomas

Hepatoma 5138 as compared with liver showed a marked deficiency in incorporation of labeled carbon into glycogen, CO2, and fatty acids; however, lactate production was normal. The lesion in glycogenesis agrees with the decreased phosphoglucomutase activity of this tumor. Incubation of hepatoma slices with pyruvate showed markedly depressed glucose production, revealing a decrease in gluconeogen...

Comparative Biochemistry of Hemoglobins

The problem of the molecular evolution of hemoglobin has been studied by comparing agar-gel electrophoresis, ultraviolet absorption spectra and resistance to alkalis in fifteen varieties of hemoglobins ranging from human hemoglobin to fish hemoglobin. The differences observed in the hemoglobins seem to be due to differences in the structures of these hemoglobins.

Comparative biochemistry of Antarctic proteins.

Prior to the start of the University’s Antarctic program in the middle 1960’s, our laboratory had long been studying the comparative biochemistry of proteins, particularly those of blood serum, milk, and egg whites. The main thrust of our studies was the use of differences in molecular structure of related proteins to help understand how the proteins function. The Antarctic program started from...
