Compactibility of cohesive soils from tablelands as influenced by cassava wastewater

ABSTRACT Consolidation tests give important insights into soil compactibility. However, it requires equipment that is not always available. The costal tablelands in Northeastern Brazil have extensive areas of cohesive soils where compaction an expressive problem. This region a prominent producer food and fibers with cassava as one the leading products. Part used for flour production, generating wastewater, which often applied organic fertilizer to soil. can affect properties due its dispersing-flocculating characteristics. Uniaxial-compression mathematical models are primary methods measure or estimate compaction. study measured compression centrifuge, seeking simple-quick method. We specific loads (stainless-steel cylinders: mass) increasing G-force (weight) simulate pressure on samples most consolidation apparatus. Soils, sampling layers, presence wastewater (manipueira) were also compared since they may compactibility-related attributes. Samples Gray Cohesive Argisol Dystrocohesive Yellow Latosol (depths 0-0.20 m 0.20-0.40 m) from Tablelands state Bahia, Brazil, used. Wastewater affected water-dispersible clay, aggregate stability, pH, ∆pH, flocculation, carbon, thus influencing compactibility but moisture maximum density by Proctor test. Centrifugation caused lower than results close those estimated models, considered promising alternative estimating consolidation. method provides insight root growth-limiting content leads it.
