Community-based fish sanctuaries: untapped potential for freshwater fish conservation

چکیده
Abstract Riverine systems and associated fish populations worldwide are threatened by human impacts, especially in tropical countries with emerging economies. In India, community-based sanctuaries a key mechanism for the conservation of freshwater populations, but there few peer-reviewed studies on this subject. Here we integrate over 35 combined years field experience literature synthesis to define classify sanctuaries. We present novel, critical analysis as social–ecological functional characterization based natural capital, ecosystem services, well-being, policy governance. find that such shaped complex processes, including coevolution religious practices ecological change, feedback processes created retaliatory conflicts between river users, diverse dynamic governance strategies. These hold great potential rare species subject myriad threats at local, regional global scales. Given complexity these systems, outline their highlight directions future research.

A New Freshwater Biodiversity Indicator Based on Fish Community Assemblages
Biodiversity has reached a critical state. In this context, stakeholders need indicators that both provide a synthetic view of the state of biodiversity and can be used as communication tools. Using river fishes as model, we developed community indicators that aim at integrating various components of biodiversity including interactions between species and ultimately the processes influencing ec...
متن کاملContribution of conservation genetics in assessing neotropical freshwater fish biodiversity.
Human activities have a considerable impact on hydrographic systems and fish fauna. The present review on conservation genetics of neotropical freshwater fish reveals that DNA analyses have been promoting increased knowledge on the genetic structure of fish species and their response to environmental changes. This knowledge is fundamental to the management of wild fish populations and the estab...

متن کاملAn overview of the status, trends and challenges of freshwater fish research and conservation in Malaysia
Freshwater fish biodiversity is a precious natural asset in terms of economic, cultural and scientific interest. And yet, the inland freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia is declining at a far greater rate than terrestrial ecosystems in the tropics. What happened, and what is being done to address the crisis? This paper extracts findings from the latest literature and explores overarching issues per...

Cross-cultural comparisons of categorization often confound cultural factors with expertise. This paper reports four experiments on the conceptual behavior of Native American and majority-culture fish experts. The two groups live in the same general area and engage in essentially the same set of fishing-related behaviors. Nonetheless, cultural differences were consistently observed. Majority-cu...
