Communication and Localization With Extremely Large Lens Antenna Array

Achieving high-rate communication with accurate localization and wireless environment sensing has emerged as an important trend of beyond-fifth sixth generation cellular systems. Extension the antenna array to extremely large scale is a potential technology for achieving such goals. However, super massive operating antennas significantly increases computational complexity system. Motivated by inherent advantages lens arrays in reducing system complexity, we consider problems array, which call “ExLens”. Since radiative near-field property emerges setting, derive closed-form response spherical wave, includes obtained on basis uniform plane wave special case. Our derivation result reveals window effect energy focusing ExLens, indicates that ExLens great position multi-user communication. We also propose effective method location channel parameters estimation, able achieve performance close Cramér-Rao lower bound. Finally, examine serves coexisting far-field users. Numerical results demonstrate effectiveness proposed estimation show minimum mean square error receiver achieves significant spectral efficiency gains complexity-and-cost reductions compared linear array.
