Commercial Logging of Timber Species Enhances Amazon (Brazil) Nut Populations: Insights from Bolivian Managed Forests

چکیده

A typical case of multiple-use forest management (MFM) in Southwestern Amazon is the commercial harvesting or Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) seeds and timber other tree species. Although most important non-timber product (NTFP) basin, species under serious threat due to deforestation may also be affected by overharvesting. However, selective logging coexisting with Bertholletia positively affect populations, thus enabling a special for MFM. For this research, we investigated impact intensity on populations Bolivian Amazon. We used demographic data from 72 two-hectare transects located within 24 community-based household forests varying collection (0–100%) (0–15% logging-disturbed area). Simulated population size increased but decreased intensity. were projected grow at average MFM scenario tested: 57.4% harvesting, 5.3% area (?100 = 1.011). Our simulations revealed that up 89% can harvested while sustaining 15% area, applying liana cutting. Modest levels application cutting compensate negative effect next century. study demonstrates production could combined sustainable scheme, increasing economic value managed tropical its promotion reduce pressure deforestation.

Socio-ecological costs of Amazon nut and timber production at community household forests in the Bolivian Amazon

The Bolivian Amazon holds a complex configuration of people and forested landscapes in which communities hold secure tenure rights over a rich ecosystem offering a range of livelihood income opportunities. A large share of this income is derived from Amazon nut (Bertholletia excelsa). Many communities also have long-standing experience with community timber management plans. However, livelihood...

Nut Production in Bertholletia excelsa across a Logged Forest Mosaic: Implications for Multiple Forest Use

Although many examples of multiple-use forest management may be found in tropical smallholder systems, few studies provide empirical support for the integration of selective timber harvesting with non-timber forest product (NTFP) extraction. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa, Lecythidaceae) is one of the world's most economically-important NTFP species extracted almost entirely from natural fore...

Trading off species protection and timber production in forests managed for multiple objectives

We address a multiobjective forest-management problem that maximizes harvested timber volume and maximizes the protection of species through the selection of protected habitat reserves. As opposed to reserving parcels of the forest for general habitat purposes, as most published works do, the model we present, and its several variants, concentrate on the preservation status of each one of the s...

Temporal Decay in Timber Species Composition and Value in Amazonian Logging Concessions

Throughout human history, slow-renewal biological resource populations have been predictably overexploited, often to the point of economic extinction. We assess whether and how this has occurred with timber resources in the Brazilian Amazon. The asynchronous advance of industrial-scale logging frontiers has left regional-scale forest landscapes with varying histories of logging. Initial harvest...

Estimating Sustainable Timber Production from Tropical Forests

Natural forests in the humid tropics differ from temperate and plantation forests in several ways: there may be many tree species; many of these may occur infrequently; there may be a large range of tree sizes and shapes present; tree ages may be unknown and indeterminate; and despite the luxuriant appearance some rainforests, growth rates may be relatively low. This has many implications for t...
