Combining Surgical Navigation and 3D Printing for Less Invasive Pelvic Tumor Resections

Surgical interventions for musculoskeletal tumor resection are particularly challenging in the pelvic region due to their anatomical complexity and proximity vital structures. Several techniques, such as surgical navigation or patient-specific instruments (PSIs), have been introduced ensure accurate margins. However, inclusion usually modifies approach making it more invasive. In this study, we propose combine both techniques reduce invasiveness while improving precision of intervention. PSIs used image-to-patient registration installation navigation’s reference frame. We tested validated proposed setup a realistic scenario with six cadavers (12 hemipelvis). The data collected during experiment allowed us study different scenarios, identifying instrument configurations that optimize accuracy. mean values obtained maximum osteotomy deviation MOD (maximum distance between planned actual each simulated scenario) were follows: ilium resections, 5.9 mm iliac crest 1.65 supra-acetabular region, acetabulum 3.44 mm, 1.88 1.97 supra-acetabular, ischial pubic regions, respectively. Additionally, those cases error below 2 ensured MODs lower. Our results show how combining several leads low errors high providing less invasive approach.
