Combination of PIP and LSI processes for SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites

چکیده
Silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon matrix composites (SiC/SiC CMCs) are promising candidates for hot gas components in jet engines. Three common manufacturing routes chemical vapor infiltration, reactive melt infiltration (RMI) and polymer pyrolysis (PIP). A combination of the processes seems attractive: remaining porosity after PIP process can be closed by subsequent siliconization, resulting a dense material. This work describes new approach combined RMI process. SiC/SiC CMCs were manufactured using Hi-Nicalon Type S fibers. An additional was carried out reduced number cycles. Microstructure examined via μCT, SEM EDS. Bending strength determined to 433 MPa; strain failure 0.60%. The overall processing time 55% compared standard route. hybrid material contained 70% less unreacted carbon than produced LSI alone.

Nondestructive Damage Evaluation in Ceramic Matrix Composites for Aerospace Applications
Infrared thermography (IRT) and acoustic emission (AE) are the two major nondestructive methodologies for evaluating damage in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for aerospace applications. The two techniques are applied herein to assess and monitor damage formation and evolution in a SiC-fiber reinforced CMC loaded under cyclic and fatigue loading. The paper explains how IRT and AE can be used f...
متن کاملMatrix cracking of fiber-reinforced ceramic composites in shear
The mechanics of cracking in fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) under general loadings remains incomplete. The present paper addresses one outstanding aspect of this problem: the development of matrix cracks in unidirectional plies under shear loading. To this end, we develop a model based on potential energy differences upstream and downstream of a fully bridged steady-state mat...
متن کاملWear of ceramic particle-reinforced metal-matrix composites
Wear experiments have shown that when the applied normal stress exceeds a critical value, a transition occurs from the regime of mild wear to that of adhesive wear. As a result, the wear rate of particle-reinforced aluminium composites increases by a hundred-fold. Based on dislocation and delamination theories, a criterion is proposed for determining the critical transition load, and a quantita...
