Col-OSSOS: Probing Ice Line/Color Transitions within the Kuiper Belt’s Progenitor Populations

چکیده
Abstract Dynamically excited objects within the Kuiper Belt show a bimodal distribution in their surface colors, and these differing colors may be tracer of where formed. In this work, we explore radial color distributions primordial planetesimal disk implications for positions ice line/color transitions Belt’s progenitor populations. Kuiper belts around nearby stars*
Context. The existence of dusty debris disks around a large fraction of solar type main-sequence stars, inferred from excess far-IR and submillimetre emission compared to that expected from stellar photospheres, suggests that leftover planetesimal belts analogous to the asteroidand comet reservoirs of the solar system are common. Aims. Sensitive submillimetre observations are essential to detec...
متن کاملIce Caps and Ice Belts: the Effects of Obliquity on Ice-albedo Feedback
Planetary obliquity determines the meridional distribution of annual mean insolation. For obliquity exceeding 55◦, the weakest insolation occurs at the equator. Stable partial snow and ice cover on such a planet would be in the form of a belt about the equator rather than polar caps. An analytical model of planetary climate is used to investigate the stability of ice caps and ice belts over the...
متن کاملProbing the Radial Distribution of the Kuiper Belt using Stellar
Introduction: The Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) are the frozen leftovers from the formation period of the outer solar system [1]. The current total mass in the Kuiper Belt is estimated to be around 0.03-0.3 Earth masses [2], but there is evidence that a much larger mass (10-40 M Earth) was originally present at the time of formation [3]. The direct observation of the TNOs does not allow reachi...
متن کاملMigration of matter from the Edgeworth–Kuiper and main asteroid belts to the Earth
A considerable portion of near-Earth objects could have come from the trans-Neptunian belt. Some of them have aphelia deep inside Jupiter’s orbit during more than 1 Myr.
متن کاملDust in Resonant Extrasolar Kuiper Belts — Grain Size and Wavelength Dependence of Disk Structure
This paper considers the distribution of dust which originates in the break-up of planetesimals that are trapped in resonance with a planet. The effect of radiation pressure on small dust grains causes their orbits and so their spatial distribution to be significantly different to that of the parent planetesimals which previous work has shown to be clumpy. It is shown that there are three disti...
