Coherence of unsteady wake of periodically plunging airfoil

We present an experimental investigation of the flow structure in near wake a NACA0012 airfoil plunging sinusoidally at chord Reynolds number Re = 20 000 and for wide range reduced frequency k Strouhal based on peak-to-peak amplitude St . Estimated mean thrust coefficients using fluctuating velocity fields confirm 2 dependence as well significant effect ? 1. Generally, time-averaged quantities are better correlated with than tested ( 3.14 0.24). Analysis streamwise cross-flow two-point cross-correlations proper orthogonal decomposition reveals that unsteady characteristics even quantities. The percentage energy fundamental modes flapping mode increases increasing , but different rates drag-producing thrust-producing wakes. There similarities to synchronisation behind oscillating bodies. spanwise-averaged cross-correlation coefficient measurement domain grows linearly small (in wakes), is nearly constant high value larger wakes). Results show most important parameter determines degree two-dimensionality wake, suggest spanwise vortices quasi-two-dimensional ? 0.05 x/c 4. implications gust generators airfoils discussed.
