Cocoa breeding must take into account the competitive value of cocoa trees

چکیده

Interactions between neighbouring plants in an ecosystem can lead to competition, even single-species stands. Genetic selection of perennial based on the individual values genotypes does not usually take into account interactions that develop over time. The purpose this study was ascertain whether effects competition might affect performance cacao tested long periods, and at what point those begin. Competition studied trees (Theobroma L) taking diameter their yields. trial design set up Côte d’Ivoire a factorial mating main genetic improvement programme. approach taken multivariate model 13 years data gathering, including genetic, spatial effects. results revealed gradual onset starting early production 4th year, when its effect became significant. It first affected growth then, 2 later, Depending years, were greatest. In strong it could 10 % annual variability, i.e. quarter variability explained by genetics. most vigorous always remained highly competitive high-yielding. will therefore be substantial with selections high-yielding individuals. “Group selection” somewhat average, less individuals would help maximize yield gains through combined group, rather than trees.

The effectiveness of somatic embryogenesis in eliminating the cocoa swollen shoot virus from infected cocoa trees.

Investigations were undertaken on the use of somatic embryogenesis to generate cocoa swollen shoot virus (CSSV) disease free clonal propagules from infected trees. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) capillary electrophoresis revealed the presence of CSSV in all the callus tissues induced from the CSSV-infected Amelonado cocoa trees (T1, T2 and T4). The virus was transmitted to primary somatic embr...

Assessment of the value of doubled haploids as progenitors in cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) breeding.

In order to evaluate twelve doubled haploids (DHs) of Theobroma cacao L. used as parents, a trial was set up in Côte d'Ivoire. Several traits were observed, such as yield, vigour, yield/vigour ratios, resistance to the black pod disease caused by Phytophthora, percentage of flat beans and mean weight of 100 cocoa beans. Out of the three progenies derived from crosses between two DHs, two showed...

Microbiota dynamics and diversity at different stages of industrial processing of cocoa beans into cocoa powder.

We sampled a cocoa powder production line to investigate the impact of processing on the microbial community size and diversity at different stages. Classical microbiological methods were combined with 16S rRNA gene PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, coupled with clone library construction, to analyze the samples. Aerobic thermoresistant spores (ThrS) (100°C; 10 min) were also isolate...

Enhancing Cocoa Beans Quality through Improved Cultural Practices in Major Cocoa Producing States of Nigeria

In West Africa, low adoption of agricultural innovations by farmers has been partly due to the complexity of the innovation structure or new knowledge beyond the farmers’ socio-economic adaptive capacities. Different attempts have been made to improve cocoa beans quality in Nigeria among which was the recommendation of ‘improved cultural practices’ or ‘best known practices’ (ICMP). This had rec...

Evaluation of Breeding Substrates for Cocoa Pollinator, Forcipomyia spp. and Subsequent Implications for Yield in a Tropical Cocoa Production System

A comparative study was carried out to determine the most suitable substrate for breeding of midges (Forcipomyia spp.) and the implications for pollination and yield in a typical cocoa production system in the forest ecological zone of Ghana. For the field experiment, the typically available substrates in cocoa farms which were used as the treatments under cocoa trees were: 1) rotten cocoa leaf...
