Clutter and Compliance: Scooter Parking Interventions and Perceptions

Shared e-scooter programs often generate complaints about improper parking because it create unappealing clutter and can make difficult for pedestrians to use the sidewalk. We examine how cities address noncompliant scooter explore public perceptions of this problem with two related studies. First, we conducted field experiments in Washington, DC (hereafter "DC"), Auckland, New Zealand. observed then evaluated efficacy three interventions mitigate parking. find low rate noncompliance, but precise is highly dependent on define noncompliance. also that in-app message reminders sidewalk decals marginally lowered rates parking, largest improvement compliance occurred after implemented a requirement scooters be physically locked bike racks. Second, examined by asking people much they think occurs what practices constitute overestimates underestimates bicycles cars.
