Close to reality? Micro-/mesocosm communities do not represent natural macroinvertebrate communities

چکیده

Abstract Background The European environmental risk assessment of plant protection products considers aquatic model ecosystem studies (microcosms/mesocosms, M/M) as suitable higher tier approach to assess treatment-related effects and derive regulatory acceptable concentrations (RAC). However, it is under debate what extent these artificial test systems reflect the risks pesticidal substances with potential harmful on natural macroinvertebrate communities, whether field communities are adequately protected by results M/M studies. We therefore compared composition, sensitivity vulnerability benthic macroinvertebrates established in control (untreated) groups 47 selected stream at 26 reference sites. Results Since 2013 number taxa present has increased 39% a mean 38 families per study. there only an average 4 study that comply recommendations provided EFSA (EFSA J 11:3290, 2013), i.e.: (i) allowing statistical identification least 70% according minimum detectable difference (here criteria slightly modified) (ii) belonging insects or crustaceans (potentially sensitive for substances). Applying criterion physiological SPEAR pesticides concept, decreases from 2.3 Conclusions Most recent do not suitably represent freshwater communities. First, because their abundances often sufficient detection order determine appropriate endpoint subsequent RAC. Recommendations given improve detectability such reliability. Second, especially vulnerable terms traits. uncertainties linked high considering representativity assemblages comparability factors determining recovery time. Thus deriving RAC (i.e., ERO-RAC) recommended. In addition, this paper discusses further concerns regarding broader context recommends development alternative tools shift towards new paradigm.

Fuzzy species distributionmodels: a way to represent plant communities spatially

Vegetation composition is fuzzy by its very nature. Classification approaches, despite their robustness, will always lead to a degradation of the original information (Palmer et al. 2002). Palmer (2007) explicitly states that: ‘we have no comprehensive theory governing the geometry of environmental variation. Some environmental gradients vary smoothly and linearly [...]. Other gradients may be ...

Macroinvertebrate communities along a third-order Iberian stream

Many studies have tried to elucidate the main factors influencing macroinvertebrate community composition and abundance in streams (e.g. Hart 1992, Dudgeon 1994, Giller & Twomey 1993, Maridet et al. 1998, Tierney et al. 1998, Pardo 2000, Doisy & Rabeni 2001). Considerable attention has been paid to food resources (e.g. Hawkins & Sedell 1981, Cowan & Oswood 1984, Boulton & Lake 1992, Friberg 199...

Taxonomic and Functional Organization of Macroinvertebrate Communities in Subarctic Streams

Ecological research based on both species and their traits help us to understand the main mechanisms and environmental factors structuring biological communities. In general, variation in community composition is thought to be a consequence of both stochastic and deterministic factors. In stream ecology, the traditional view has been that the local habitat conditions pose a strong environmental...

Relationships between land use , spatial scale and stream macroinvertebrate communities

1. The structure of lotic macroinvertebrate communities may be strongly influenced by land-use practices within catchments. However, the relative magnitude of influence on the benthos may depend upon the spatial arrangement of different land uses in the catchment. 2. We examined the influence of land-cover patterns on in-stream physico-chemical features and macroinvertebrate assemblages in nine...
