Clinicopathological study of pontine hemorrhage.
This report concerns a clinico-pathological study of 60 patients afflicted with primary pontine hemorrhage. The illness was fatal in 43, 17 patients survived. Ophthalmic signs, autonomic disturbances and transient visual hallucination were observed and discussed. A ruptured microaneurysm within the border of a pontine hematoma was detected in this study, and in the first report of such a finding.
متن کاملPrimary pontine hemorrhage: clinicopathological correlations.
In 18 autopsies from patients with primary pontine hemorrhage we studied the sites of bleeding, the volumes and development of hematomas and clinicopathological correlations. A modular optical electronic planimeter was introduced to measure the size of hematomas. The series of patients can be divided into 2 groups from the viewpoint of bleeding sites, their development and clinical symptomatolo...
متن کاملPrimary pontine hemorrhage and gustatory disturbance: clinicoanatomic study.
A clinicoanatomic study of 12 patients with tegmental-type primary pontine hemorrhage proved the presence of a gustatory disturbance among other clinical symptoms on the same side of the tongue as that of the pontine lesion, and suggested the secondary pathway of gustatory sensation from the solitary tract nucleus ascends without decussation in the homolateral pontine tegmentum. These results c...
متن کاملLateral pontine hemorrhage: reappraisal of benign cases.
We reviewed 6 computed tomography-documented cases of primary lateral pontine hemorrhage that occurred in our two institutions over a 2-year period. All patients survived the acute stroke, with excellent functional recovery in 4. The level of consciousness of the patient and the size of the hemorrhage had no consistent bearing on outcome. Both of these features have been considered important pr...
متن کاملPontine hemorrhage presenting as ataxic hemiparesis.
THE CLINICAL PICTURE of hypertensive pontine hemorrhage is felt to be uniform. Coma is of abrupt onset with pupillary miosis, total external ophthalmoplegia, and quadriplegia. Death is the rule and occurs within hours to days. 2 This picture has been somewhat modified since the advent of CT scanning. Case reports have documented "submassive" pontine hemorrhage with partial to complete recovery....
