Clinico-epidemiological presentation of acute encephalitis syndrome in patients visiting a tertiary hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal: A descriptive cross-sectional study

Introduction: Acute encephalitis syndrome is diagnosed when a person of any age, and at time the year, presents with acute onset fever change in mental status and/or new seizures. It has an ill-defined clinico-epidemiological presentation Nepal, making it challenging medical condition. The objective this study was to clinical profile syndrome. Methods: All consecutive admissions Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital between April 2017 December 2018 were screened for diagnosis confirmed by history, examination, laboratory findings, brain imaging, electroencephalography. patients who met inclusion criteria enrolled. Results: age population 49.56±22.28 years male predominance 42(58.3%). Among etiologies, 1.38% had Japanese encephalitis, 4.12% herpes autoimmune encephalitis. Out 72 patients, 52 (72.22%) Glasgow coma scale >12, 15 (20.83%) 8 12, five (6.94%) (Glasgow <8). altered (91.66%) most commonly noticed manifestation followed fever.
