Clinical profile and outcome of children with acute bacterial meningitis in a tertiary care centre in eastern Nepal

Background: Bacterial meningitis is a severe infection of the central nervous system with varied clinical presentations. It associated substantial mortality and morbidity. Objectives: The objective this study was to assess profile, including features, laboratory radiological parameters, course, treatment, response complications, outcome children at discharge. Methods: A prospective observational conducted among 52 inpatient acute bacterial aged one month 14 years over period six months. patients were enrolled during admission followed up daily till Socio-demographic, clinical, diagnostic details outcomes recorded analysed using statistical package for social sciences version 20. Results: median age two male female ratio 2:1. Fever (45, 87%), vomiting (37, 71%), seizure (33, 64%) headache (22, 46%) most common symptoms. cerebrospinal fluid culture positive in three (6%) cases. Complications seen 20 (39%) four (7.7%) deaths. Patients prolonged fever, malnutrition, loss consciousness, ear discharge, presence meningeal signs, abnormal pupil, high protein, fluid, blood culture, low pH, hyperlactataemia significantly complications (p <0.05). Conclusion: Factors like longer duration neurological findings higher rates complications.
