Clinical and Surgical Features of Acquired Middle Ear Cholesteatoma: A 10 Years Population-based Study

Background: Cholesteatomas are benign destructive lesions of the temporal bone that may lead to life-threatening complications. Objectives: This study described clinical and surgical characteristics chronic otitis media patients with acquired middle ear cholesteatoma. Methods: Among 1790 detected during almost 10 years, 449 suffered from The features data were investigated. Results: patients, (25.0%) cases had cholesteatoma a mean age 32.2 ± 16.1 SD 62.8% male. most common symptom was otorrhoea (53%), followed by hearing impairment (37.9%). Erosion facial nerve canal observed in 33.1% dural plate erosion 4.8% cases, labyrinthine fistula 10.3% patients. Moreover, ossicular chain highest frequency incus (40%), malleus (33%) stapes (26%). Amongst surgically treated 59.3% underwent mastoidectomy wall preservation, 29.7% modified radical mastoidectomy, performed 11% Conclusions: Cholesteatoma seen about quarter media. Based on our findings, can be associated serious complications such as (33.1%), (4.8%), (10.3%). Regarding functional importance system high prevalence disease complications, needs long-term follow-up.
