Climatological sensitivities of shallow-cumulus bulk entrainment in continental and oceanic locations

چکیده
Abstract Cumulus entrainment is a complex process that has long challenged conceptual understanding and atmospheric prediction. To investigate this observationally, two retrievals are used to generate multi-year climatologies of shallow-cumulus bulk ( ? ) at Atmospheric Radiation Measurement cloud observatories, one in the US southern Great Plains (SGP) other Azores archipelago eastern North Atlantic (ENA). The statistical distributions thus obtained, as well certain environmental cloud-related sensitivities , consistent with previous findings from large-eddy simulations. retrieved robustly increases cloudlayer relative humidity decreases wider clouds ensembles larger cloud-base mass fluxes. While also correlates negatively measures cloud-layer vigor (e.g., maximum in-cloud vertical velocity depth), extent which these metrics actually regulate (or vice-versa) unclear. Novel include robust decrease increasing subcloud wind speed oceanic flows, flux individual cumuli. A strong land–ocean contrast found, median values 0.5-0.6 km ?1 continental SGP site 1.0-1.1 ENA site. This trend associated drier deeper layers, along fluxes, SGP, all favor reduced . flow-dependence implies its various should be accounted for cumulus parameterization schemes.

Parameterization of the Bulk Effects of Lateral and Cloud-Top Entrainment in Transient Shallow Cumulus Clouds
A parameterization of shallow cumulus clouds for use in atmospheric general circulation models is proposed. The parameterization uses a bulk representation of an ensemble of transient clouds. Entrainment of environmental air occurs at the ascending top of the cumulus cloud and also at the lateral boundaries of the region below the top of the cloud. Complete detrainment of the air in the cloud o...

[1] Aerosol-cloud relationships are derived from 14 warm continental cumuli cases sampled during the 2006 Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (GoMACCS) by the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) Twin Otter aircraft. Cloud droplet number concentration is clearly proportional to the subcloud accumulation mode aerosol number concentration. A...

[1] A new framework for diagnosing mixing in cumulus convection is proposed, where the vertical evolution of the cloud mass flux distribution as a function of given parcel properties is viewed as a mapping process. Matrices that characterize this mapping process are constructed using a Lagrangian particle dispersion model embedded in a Large Eddy Simulation. Extending previous use of LES-diagno...
