Climate action with revenue recycling has benefits for poverty, inequality and well-being

چکیده
Existing estimates of optimal climate policy ignore the possibility that carbon tax revenues could be used in a progressive way; model results therefore typically imply near-term action comes at some cost to poor. Using Nested Inequalities Climate Economy (NICE) model, we show an equal per capita refund implies achieving 2 °C target can pay large and immediate dividends for improving well-being, reducing inequality alleviating poverty. In calculation weighs benefits against costs mitigation, recommended is characterized by aggressive followed slower climb towards full decarbonization; this pattern—which driven revenue Laffer curve—prevents runaway warming while also preserving redistribution. Accounting these dynamics corrects long-standing bias strong literature. analyses often redistribution assume mitigation will burden poor short term. Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) estimation suggests such reduce inequality, alleviate poverty increase well-being globally.

Inequality and Subjective Well-Being
Diminishing marginal well-being from income suggests that redistributing income from the rich to the poor will raise average levels of well-being within a society. This utilitarian logic suggests that— conditional on average income—countries with greater income inequality will experience lower levels of average well-being. Yet existing research has failed to find clear evidence that inequality ...
متن کاملThe case for cross-disciplinary social science research on poverty, inequality and well-being
Arguments for cross-disciplinary research in development studies have been applied recently to work on poverty, inequality and well-being. However, much research on these issues remains fragmented and, in particular, the intellectual barrier between economics and the other social science subjects continues to be powerful. In this paper, we review the prospects for cross-disciplinary research (b...
متن کاملTalents, Preferences and Inequality of Well-Being∗
The distribution of gross income net of taxes and transfers – or equivalently consumption – is generally considered a reasonable approximation of the distribution of well-being in the society. One typically observes differing trends in the distribution of gross incomes across countries or within the same country over time. Where do these inequalities originate from? Considering a simple model w...
متن کاملWell-being and the Complexity of Poverty A Subjective Well-being Approach
This investigation studies human well-being from a subjective well-being approach. On the basis of a Mexican database the investigation shows that there is a weak relationship between subjective well-being and indicators of well-being such as income and consumption. Therefore, subjective well-being provides additional useful information to study human well-being and, in consequence, poverty. Th...
متن کاملMeasuring Well-being Inequality with a Multidimensional Gini Index
Individual well-being is inherently a multidimensional concept. Any attempt to measure inequality of well-being should take this multidimensionality explicitly into account. In this paper we propose to measure well-being inequality by a multidimensional generalization of the Gini coe¢ cient. We follow a normative procedure and derive two Gini indices of well-being inequality from their underlyi...
