Circumferential buckling of a hydrogel tube emptying upon dehydration

چکیده
Abstract A cylindrical hydrogel tube, completely submerged in water, hydrates by swelling and filling its internal cavity. When it comes back into contact with air, dehydrates: the tube thus expels solvent through walls, shrinking. This dehydration process causes a depression cavity, which can lead to circumferential buckling. Here we study occurrence of such buckling using continuous model that combines nonlinear elasticity Flory–Rehner theory, take account both large deformations active behaviour hydrogel. In quasi-static approximation, use incremental deformation formalism, extended chemo-mechanical equations, determine threshold value enclosed volume at is triggered. critical found depend on shell thickness, chemical potential constitutive features. The results obtained are good agreement finite element simulations complete dynamic problem.

Anisotropic dehydration of hydrogel surfaces
Efforts to develop tissue-engineered skin for regenerative medicine have explored natural, synthetic, and hybrid hydrogels. The creation of a bilayer material, with the stratification exhibited by native skin, is a complex problem. The mechanically robust, waterproof epidermis presents the stratum corneum at the tissue/air interface, which confers many of these protective properties. In this wo...
متن کاملEffect of ethanol upon gastric emptying.
The effect of ethanol upon gastric emptying in healthy human subjects was studied by measuring the gastric emptying rates of three 750 ml meals, the osmolalities, energy densities, and pH of which were similar. Meal A, which contained 80 ml alcohol, emptied more rapidly than meal B, which contained 40 ml ethanol and 63.3 g dextrose; and meal B emptied more rapidly than meal C, which contained 1...
متن کاملMass Transfer During the Pre-Usage Dehydration of Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogel Wound Dressings
Nowadays, hydrogels are widely used as wound dressings in biomedical applications. Similar to other types of the moist (wet) wound dressings, it is necessary to have sufficient information about their dehydration kinetics during the pre-usage period (e.g. storage duration) and also the wound healing process. In this work, hydrogel wound dressings based on polyvinyl alcohol were prepared by...
متن کاملInfluence of environmental factors in the in vitro dehydration of hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contact lenses.
PURPOSE To analyze in vitro the influence of different environmental conditions on the dehydration pattern of seven currently marketed hydrogel (Hy) and silicone hydrogel (Si-Hy) contact lenses (CL). METHODS Three Hy and four Si-Hy CLs were evaluated. CLs were exposed to four different relative humidity (RH) conditions (5%, 30%, 50%, and 70%) and two air flow (AF) rates (0 and 2.75 m/seg) wit...
