Circadian rhythms in liver metabolism and disease

Mounting research evidence demonstrates a significant negative impact of circadian disruption on human health. Shift work, chronic jet lag and sleep disturbances are associated with increased incidence of metabolic syndrome, and consequently result in obesity, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. Here, these associations are reviewed with respect to liver metabolism and disease.

Evolving roles of circadian rhythms in liver homeostasis and pathology

Circadian clock in mammals is determined by a core oscillator in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus and synchronized peripheral clocks in other tissues. The coherent timing systems could sustain robust output of circadian rhythms in response to the entrainment controlled environmentally. Disparate approaches have discovered that clock genes and clock-controlled genes (CCGs) e...

Vitamin D suppresses cellular pathways of diabetes complication in liver

Objective(s): The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin D on glucose metabolism, as well as the expression of five key genes involved in the development of diabetes complications in liver tissue of diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups (8 ra...

Glycolysis inhibitor 2-deoxy-D-glucose suppresses carcinogen-induced rat hepatocarcinogenesis by restricting cancer cell metabolism.

The abnormal metabolism of cancer cells is a crucial feature of tumors and provides promising therapeutic targets for cancer treatments. Aerobic glycolysis in cancer cells, termed the Warburg effect, is a highlighted characteristic of cancer‑specific metabolism. However, the effect of glycolysis inhibition on hepatocarcinogenesis remains to be elucidated. In the present study, the effects of th...

Hepatocarcinogenesis and ceramide/cholesterol metabolism.

Sphingolipids (SLs) and cholesterol are critical structural components of membrane bilayers. Although recent evidence has revealed an emerging role of both lipids in signaling pathways, their contribution to cancer development and treatment has been largely overlooked. Sphingolipids comprise a family of bioactive lipids with divergent roles in numerous cellular processes. In particular, ceramid...
