Chromospheric Carbon Monoxide Formation around a Solar Pore

Abstract We present observations of NOAA AR 11159, obtained on 2011 February 14 in the 4.7 μ m band carbon monoxide (CO) and coordinated with spectroscopic imaging three atomic lines (Na i 5896 Å, Fe 7090 Ca ii 8542 Å) which sample heights from mid-photosphere to chromosphere. Phase-difference spectra between observed spectral instead indicate that CO form at z ≈ 530−650 km quiet Sun. During two hours observations, seven long-lived cooling events (“cold bubbles”) were region surrounding a large pore, but not visible lines. These show self-similar temporal evolution time scales consistent chemical formation rate 1000 km. Due lack such features Sun, we hypothesize magnetic canopy field suppresses upward propagation acoustic waves into chromosphere subsequent shocks, depresses heating allows condense cool atmosphere those heights. “cold bubbles” may be source chromospheric produces unexpectedly high ( km) limb extensions seen stronger lines, provide unique opportunity study this enigmatic component solar spatially resolved observations.
