Chevalier barley ‐ The influence of a world‐leading malting variety

During the 19th century ‘Chevalier’, said to have been developed from a single plant found in 1820, was world-leading malting barley. The superior quality of ‘Chevalier’ lead its world-wide spread at time development industry. In this study, we investigate how cultivar and adopted Nordic seed systems time. Single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping up 155-year-old museum specimens historical grains labelled “Chevalier” Chevalier accessions preserved genebanks, total 282 individuals representing 47 accessions, allowed us divide into four categories: True Chevalier, mixtures, crosses, non-Chevaliers. Comparisons with previously genotyped landraces showed how, century, mixed locally produced landrace cultivated together. We suggest that spontaneous outbreeding events gave rise hybrids which were subsequently selected propagated when resulting genetic combinations. Such farmer-driven breeding activities would preceded modern but resembled principles later used, even though scientific understanding inheritance not yet known.
