Chemically Catalyzed Phytoextraction for Sustainable Cleanup of Soil Lead Contamination in a Community Garden in Jersey City, New Jersey

Soil lead (Pb) contamination in Pb paint-contaminated homes is a serious health risk urban areas. Phytoextraction green and sustainable technology for soil remediation, but its efficiency depends on the geochemical partitioning of soil. Following successful laboratory, greenhouse, panel experiments, field study was conducted to demonstrate effectiveness chemically catalyzed phytoextraction model removal. A biodegradable chelating agent, ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) applied during by vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) Pb-contaminated community garden Jersey City, New Jersey. Results showed that concentration reduced from 1144 359 mg/kg 3 years, despite ongoing input plots nearby construction site. EDDS effective converting non-plant-available forms (i.e., carbonate-bound, oxide-bound, organic-bound forms) plant-available water-soluble exchangeable forms). With application, roots accumulated 532, 231, 401 Years 1, 2, 3, respectively, which were higher than values obtained without applications (228, 154, 214 mg/kg). This demonstrated removal soils.
