Characterization of Vibrio cholerae aerotaxis.

The ability to move toward favorable environmental conditions, called chemotaxis, is common among motile bacteria. In particular, aerotaxis has been extensively studied in Escherichia coli and was shown to be dependent on the aer and tsr genes. Three putative aer gene homologs were identified in the Vibrio cholerae genome, designated aer-1 (VC0512), aer-2 (VCA0658), and aer-3 (VCA0988). Deletio...

Vibrio cholerae hemagglutinin/protease inactivates CTXphi.

Pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae are lysogens of the filamentous phage CTXphi, which carries the genes for cholera toxin (ctxAB). We found that the titers of infective CTXphi in culture supernatants of El Tor CTXphi lysogens increased rapidly during exponential growth but dropped to undetectable levels late in stationary-phase growth. When CTXphi transducing particles were mixed with stati...

Characterization of Vibrio cholerae isolated from oysters.

Of 790 samples of oyster shellstock freshly harvested during a 12-month survey, 111 (most of which were harvested from June through August) contained Vibrio cholerae non-O1 (611 strains), and seven contained O1 Inaba (11 strains) organisms. None of the V. cholerae strains isolated were enterotoxigenic by immunological and biological tests.

Characterization of undermethylated sites in Vibrio cholerae.

The activities of DNA methyltransferases are important for a variety of cellular functions in bacteria. In this study, we developed a modified high-throughput technique called methyl homopolymer tail mediated sequencing (methyl HTM-seq) to identify the undermethylated sites in the Vibrio cholerae genome for the two DNA methyltransferases, Dam, an adenine methyltransferase, and VchM, a cytosine ...

Environmental signals controlling production of hemagglutinin/protease in Vibrio cholerae.

Vibrio cholerae hemagglutinin/protease (Hap) was induced upon nutrient limitation and strongly repressed by glucose. Hap was not produced in a mutant defective in the cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein, suggesting that intracellular cAMP levels mediate Hap expression. No difference was found in Hap production between an rpoS deletion mutant and its isogenic wild-type precursor, indicating that ...
