چکیده

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a Culicoides-borne of domestic and wild ruminants caused by EHD virus (EHDV). This circulates in multiple serotypes. In late September 2021, novel strain belonging to EHDV-8 was reported cattle farms Central–Western Tunisia, the fall 2022, same also detected Italy Spain. present study, we described occurrence deer and, preliminary identification potential Culicoides species responsible for transmission selected areas Tunisia. identified carcasses found 2021 2022 national reserve El Feidja, Jendouba, Northwestern isolated on cell culture. Instead, insect vectors were collected October only surrounding city Tozeur (Southern Tunisia) where cases confirmed. Morphological showed that 95% them belonged kingi oxystoma both tested positive RNA. C. imicola not this collection RNA evidenced vector pools 2020, prior official emergence. EHDV whole genome sequences obtained directly from infected biological samples vectors. share nucleotide identity ranging 99.42 100% amino acid 99.18 across all segments with EHDV-8/17 TUN2021 reference sequence.

Malignant catarrhal fever-like disease in Barbary red deer (Cervus elaphus barbarus) naturally infected with a virus resembling alcelaphine herpesvirus 2.

Eight Barbary red deer (Cervus elaphus barbarus) developed clinical signs suggestive of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) over a 28-day period. These animals were housed outdoors with four other species of ruminants. Affected red deer had lethargy, ocular signs, and nasal discharge and were euthanatized within 48 h. Lesions included ulcers of the muzzle, lips, and oral cavity associated with infi...

Dynamics of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus infection within the vector, Culicoides sonorensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Culicoides sonorensis biting midges are confirmed vectors of epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), which causes mortality in white-tailed deer and ruminant populations. Currently, of the seven EHDV serotypes, only 1, 2, and 6 are detected in the USA, and very few studies have focused on the infection time course of these serotypes within the midge. The objective of this current research w...

Effect of Temperature on Replication of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Viruses in Culicoides sonorensis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Replication of arboviruses, including orbiviruses, within the vector has been shown to be temperature dependent. Cooler ambient temperatures slow virus replication in arthropod vectors, whereas viruses replicate faster and to higher titers at warmer ambient temperatures. Previous research with epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) serotype 1 demonstrated that higher temperatures were assoc...

Blood Meal Analysis of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Central Tunisia

To evaluate the host preferences of Culicoides species (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Central Tunisia, we identified the source of blood meals of field collected specimens by sequencing of the cytochrome b (cyt b) mitochondrial locus and Prepronociceptine single copy nuclear gene. The study includes the most common and abundant livestock associated species of biting midges in Tunisia: C. imicola...
