Characterization of Electrospray Drop Size Distributions by Mobility-Classified Mass Spectrometry: Implications for Ion Clustering in Solution and Ion Formation Pathways

چکیده
One of the outcomes electrospray ionization is size distribution droplets, which determines, together with solvent composition and source gas temperature, minimum distance from sprayer tip to mass spectrometer inlet therefore ion transfer efficiency. Even more importantly, average number analyte molecules and, if present, contaminant species per droplet depend on drop size. Consequently, a key parameter in nonspecific clustering solution suppression. The finding that small sizes improve spectral quality led development nanoelectrospray sources, dispense liquid flow rates below 0.1 μL/min can generate drops diameters smaller than 100 nm. However, current discussions effect formation pathways efficiencies remain qualitative because exact distributions are unknown. Here, we show mobility-classified spectrometry raffinose cluster ions allows us determine very precisely generated by positive- negative-ion modes. Based derived distributions, quantitatively predict extract accurate probabilities for emission parent upon Coulomb fission.
