Characterization of C-Band Coherent Receiver Front-ends for Transmission Systems beyond S-C-L-Band

The reuse of already deployed single mode fiber is seen as one the key enablers for cost-efficient capacity upgrades optical transmission systems. Unlocking benefits other bands, to further increase capacity, can enable networks adapt highly dynamic traffic patterns. In here and now, C-band based coherent receiver frontends would be a cost-effective solution support bandwidth division multiplexing without need bespoke expensive per band designs. To investigate potential use existing receivers multi-band applications, we present simple rapid measurement method characterize quadrature phase error electrical output swing. We experimentally four different commercially available from upper E- lower U-band covering 25.4 THz (i.e. 200 nm) total bandwidth. obtained results reveal that micro-optics discrete 90° hybrids indium phosphide (InP) balanced photodetectors are promising candidates While at same time, investigated on photonic integrated circuits in InP suffer strong reduced common rejection ratio wavelength regime below C-band.
