Chapter 12. English participles in the derivational paradigm

This chapter surveys the different uses of English participles and discusses their status with respect to distinction between derivation inflection. In debate about whether are verbal or adjectival, indeed a mix two, most scholars have taken position that ability undergo further (with affixes like -ness negative un- for instance) indicates adjectival status. The paper assumes descriptive focus and, without aiming take conclusive relative this general debate, explores such further. patterns covered in relatively few, but productive. leads derivational networks sparse membership, generally stable formal semantic alignment.
