Chaotic dynamics in shear-thickening surfactant solutions
– We report the observation of dynamical behaviour in dilute, aqueous solutions of a surfactant CTAT (cetyl trimethylammonium p-toluenesulphonate), below the overlap concentration c⋆. At these concentrations, CTAT forms cylindrical micelles and shows a pronounced shear thickening transition above a concentration-dependent critical shear rate γ̇c. An analysis of the time-series of the stress rela...
متن کاملSelf-similar shear-thickening behavior in CTAB/NaSal surfactant solutions
The e ect of salt concentration Cs on the critical shear rate γ̇c required for the onset of shear thickening and apparent relaxation time λ of the shear-thickened phase, has been investigated systematically for dilute CTAB/NaSal solutions. Experimental data suggest a self-similar behavior of γ̇c and λ as functions of Cs. Speci cally, γ̇c ∼ Cs whereas λ∼ Cs such that an e ective Weissenberg numberW...
متن کاملStrip waves in vibrated shear-thickening wormlike micellar solutions.
We present an instability in vertically vibrated dilute wormlike micellar solutions. Above a critical driving acceleration the fluid forms elongated solitary domains of high amplitude waves. We model this instability using a Mathieu equation modified to account for the non-Newtonian character of the fluid. We find that our model successfully reproduces the observed transitions.
متن کاملShear thickening in dilute solutions of wormlike micelles
– A new mechanism is suggested for shear thickening in dilute solutions of wormlike micelles. According to this mechanism, there is an instability above a critical shear rate, γ̇c, by which micelles aggregate to form networks of bundles. We examine the first step of this instability by studying the aggregation of two micelles into a paired bundle. The model predicts that γ̇c is given by the inver...
متن کاملA phenomenological model for shear-thickening in wormlike micelle solutions
– We present a simple phenomenological model to describe shear-thickening in a wormlike micelle solution. The solution is assumed to undergo a reaction above a critical shear stress, to form a gel-like phase. There is no flow within this “gel” phase, and it is insoluble in the solution. The amount of gel in the system is determined by a competition between a stress-dependent reaction rate, whic...
