Changes in shore platform wetting and drying cycles following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake: Implications for incipient marine terrace evolution

Abstract Co‐seismic uplift of Kaikōura Peninsula in 2016 has substantially reduced the number wetting and drying cycles that occur on shore platforms newly uplifted incipient marine terraces. A simple empirical model incorporating field laboratory measurements was used to determine frequency cycles. The mudstone supratidal terraces are vulnerable material disintegration slaking through sustained drying, occasional sweeping by storm waves. Overall, have decreased six eight transects, between −8% −148%, resulting prolonged following (upwards a 29% increase annual hours). We conclude accelerated rates denudation due enhanced post‐uplift likely return sections their former intertidal pre‐uplift state, potentially removing evidence co‐seismic event. Terrace preservation, however, will be highly variable locations depending its inherited morphology, lithological vulnerability, timing any future tectonism.
