Challenges with misclassification of American Indian/Alaska Native race and Hispanic ethnicity on death records in North Carolina occupational fatalities surveillance

As frequently segregated and exploitative environments, workplaces are important sites in driving health mortality disparities by race ethnicity. Because many worksites federally regulated, US also offer opportunities for effectively intervening to mitigate these disparities. Development of policies worker safety equity should be informed evidence, including results from research studies that use death records other sources administrative data. North Carolina has a long history Black/white work-related evidence such is emerging Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. The size AI/AN populations have increased over the last decade, largest population eastern US. Previous indicates misidentification identities on can lead underestimation race/ethnicity-specific rates. In this commentary, we describe problems complexities involved determining records. We provide specific examples likely introducing bias occupational disparity documentation, recommendations improved data collection, analysis, interpretation. Our primary recommendation build maintain relationships with local community leadership, so improvements ascertainment ethnicity grounded lived experience workers communities color.
