CFD Investigation for Sonar Dome with Bulbous Bow Effect

The objective of this study is to design a hull-mounted sonar dome ship using OpenFOAM with bulbous bow effect at cruise speed in calm water. Verification and validation for the original simulation are conducted. Next, 1.44 million grid size selected different lengths. By protruding forward 7.5% ship’s length, optimal 17% resistance reduction achieved mainly caused by pressure decrease. not only functions same way as bow, but viscous flow behaviors also improved. protrusion corresponding 90 deg phase lag reduces wave amplitude. acceleration outside boundary layer wake velocity higher coinciding much lower total resistance. A smaller separation thinner observed behind because its back slope less steep. high covers area around crest does hit flare form pressure. Consequently, on front low result decreases vortical structures
