Centennial-Scale Land-Cover Change on Babeldaob Island, Palau

چکیده
We used publicly available land-cover datasets (1921, 1947, 1976, 1992, 2001, 2006, 2014) to assess change on Babeldaob Island, Republic of Palau. Land-cover data were organized, classified, and summarized by area percentage island cover for forest, mangrove, non-forest vegetation, non-vegetation. Japanese colonial administration the between 1921 1947 included industrial mining agriculture, which reduced total non-mangrove forest 16%. Temporal vegetation dynamics from through 2014 indicate unassisted regeneration 12% with a concomitant decrease in including abandoned majority happened 1976. Mangrove appears have remained stable throughout 93 year study period. Ground-truth observations showed highest rates since 1976 non-vegetated areas, followed marsh swamp forest. The proportion increased at least twofold after WWII, half comprising roads. Contrary other tropical geographies, we saw expansion following completion major perimeter road. However, larger landscape is permeated dynamic edges subject wildfire land-use disturbances.

Impact of urban land cover change on land surface temperature
The rapid growth in urban population is seen to create a need for the development of more urban infrastructures. In order to meet this need, natural surfaces such as vegetation are been replaced with non-vegetated surfaces such as asphalt and bricks which has the ability to absorb heat and release it later. This change in land cover is seen to increase the land surface temperature. Previous stu...
متن کاملModeling Land-use and Land-cover Change
Models are used in a variety of fields, including land change science, to better understand the dynamics of systems, to develop hypotheses that can be tested empirically, and to make predictions and/or evaluate scenarios for use in assessment activities. Modeling is an important component of each of the three foci outlined in the science plan of the Land-use and -cover change (LUCC) project (Tu...
متن کاملSurface Urban Heat Island Analysis of Shanghai (China) Based on the Change of Land Use and Land Cover
In this paper, we present surface urban heat island (SUHI) analysis of Shanghai (China) based on the change in land use and land cover using satellite Landsat images from 2002 to 2013. With the rapid development of urbanization, urban ecological and environmental issues have aroused widespread concern. The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a crucial problem, as its generation and evolution are ...

Hotspots of uncertainty in land‐use and land‐cover change projections: a global‐scale model comparison
Model-based global projections of future land-use and land-cover (LULC) change are frequently used in environmental assessments to study the impact of LULC change on environmental services and to provide decision support for policy. These projections are characterized by a high uncertainty in terms of quantity and allocation of projected changes, which can severely impact the results of environ...
