Cellulase and Xylanase Production by a Newly Isolated Penicillium crustosum Strain under Solid-State Fermentation, Using Water Hyacinth Biomass as Support, Substrate, and Inducer

Cellulase and xylanase have been widely studied for bioconversion processes applied in various industries. The high cost of these enzymes remains to be the major bottleneck large-scale commercial application lignocellulosic biorefinery. use agroindustrial residues weeds as fermentation substrates is an important strategy increase cellulolytic production reduce costs. Penicillium crustosum was newly isolated selected study its enzyme during solid-state (SSF). Natural pretreated water hyacinth (WH) biomass used support, substrate inducer cellulases xylanases. Thermochemical pretreatments WH at 121 °C sulfuric acid three concentrations (0.2, 0.6 1 M) were assayed. released mono- oligo-saccharides that favored fungal growth on SSF. a cost-effective substrate-support inducer, which solid medium, impregnated with saline solution, containing only (NH4)2SO4, KH2PO4 y MgCl2. Maximum (carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase)) xylanases productions P. cultured SSF reached using H2SO4 M °C. simultaneous CMCase (647.51 4257.35 U/g dry WH, respectively) are among highest values ever reported.
