Caustic Esophageal Stenosis: Epidemiological, Clinical, Endoscopic and Therapeutic Aspects at the Gabriel Touré University Hospital in Bamako

Voluntary or accidental ingestion of a caustic product is increasingly encountered in our country. Caustic esophageal stenosis the most common sequel. Its treatment involves instrumental dilation and/or surgery which particularly heavy. The aim of this study was to epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects caustic strictures context. retrospective study took place from December 2013 2017 the Hepato-Gastroenterology department Gabriel Toure university hospital Bamako. We included patients with stenosis referred gastrointestinal endoscopy unit for dilation. 67 patients admitted were included. mean age was 20.76 ± 19.9 years extremes 1 70 sex ratio 1.9. In 50.7% cases, product ingested basic nature. symptomatology was dominated by dysphagia (100%), vomiting emaciated (60%) and cough (40%). In 59 (88%) patients, the stenosis unique multiple 8 (12%). The KILLIAN mouth as sole site found 40.3% of patients. number sessions ≤ 3 16.4% >3 83.6% 4.59 ± 1.57 sessions. evolution favorable 95.5% patients. However, we recorded three (3) cases death all following perforation. Conclusion: Caustic stenosis, consequence of ingestion caustics, observed Endoscopic dilation occupies an important its management.
