Causal inference using regression-based statistical control: Confusion in Econometrics

چکیده
Abstract Regression is a widely used econometric tool in research. In observational studies, based on number of assumptions, regression-based statistical control methods attempt to analyze the causation between treatment and outcome by adding variables. However, this approach may not produce reliable estimates causal effects. addition shortcomings method, lack confidence mainly related ambiguous formulations econometrics, such as definition selection bias, core variables, method testing for robustness. Within framework models, we clarify assumption inference using controls, described discuss how select variables satisfy conduct robustness tests regression estimates.

Teaching Causal Inference in Undergraduate Econometrics
This paper argues that the current way in which the undergraduate introductory econometrics course is taught is neither inline with current empirical practice nor very intuitive. It proposes a shift in focus of the course on causal inference using the Roy-Rubin Causal Model (RRCM). A second theme of the paper is the suggestion to use random regressors from the start to improve the ability of st...
متن کاملIdentification, Weak Instruments and Statistical Inference in Econometrics
We discuss statistical inference problems associated with identification and testability in econometrics, and we emphasize the common nature of the two issues. After reviewing the relevant statistical notions, we consider in turn inference in nonparametric models and recent developments on weakly identified models (or weak instruments). We point out that many hypotheses, for which test procedur...
متن کاملCausal statistical inference in high dimensions
We present a short selective review of causal inference from observational data, with a particular emphasis on the high-dimensional scenario where the number of measured variables may be much larger than sample size. Despite major identifiability problems, making causal inference from observational data very ill-posed, we outline a methodology providing useful bounds for causal effects. Further...
متن کاملRegression and Weighting Methods for Causal Inference Using Instrumental Variables
Recent researches in econometrics and statistics have gained considerable insights into the use of instrumental variables (IVs) for causal inference. A basic idea is that IVs serve as an experimental handle, the turning of which may change each individual’s treatment status and, through and only through this effect, also change observed outcome. The average difference in observed outcome relati...
