Carry-based Differential Power Analysis (CDPA) and its Application to Attacking HMAC-SHA-2

In this paper, we introduce Carry-based Differential Power Analysis (CDPA), a novel methodology that allows for attacking schemes use arithmetical addition. We apply to HMAC-SHA-2. provide full mathematical analysis of the method and show under certain assumptions with sufficient amount traces any key can be revealed. experimental part demonstrate successful application attack both in software simulation on an FPGA board using power consumption measurements. With as few 30K measured board, recover secrets allow forging HMAC-SHA-2 signature message 3% cases — while 275K success rate reaches 100%. This means implementation HMAC-SHA-2, even pure parallel hardware, is vulnerable side-channel attacks, unless it adequately protected. To best our knowledge, first published full-fledged hardware implementations which does not require profiling stage.
