Cardiac transplantation in adult congenital heart disease: a narrative review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background and Objective: As more children with congenital heart disease survive to adulthood, adult (ACHD) prevalence will increase (currently ~1 million US patients). Heart failure (HF) accounts for 26–42% of ACHD deaths. The rate transplantations (ACHD HTx) is also increasing. We describe the HTx recipient/candidate cohort, analyze outcomes, identify specific challenges, discuss opportunities better serve patients HF.

Patients with atrial septal defects were included but not those with Marfan’s syndrome or undergo...
متن کاملSudden Cardiac Death in Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
Sudden death of presumed arrhythmic etiology is a leading cause of mortality in adults with congenital heart disease. Anticipated benefits of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) must be weighed against high complication rates. Without robust evidence from randomized trials, caregivers face difficult decisions in selecting appropriate candidates. Although secondary prevention indica...

Orthotopic heart transplantation has been performed in pediatric patients for 27 years. Indications changed through the years, showing the increase of patients receiving a heart transplant for congenital heart defects, after having experienced repeated surgical palliations. At present, 1-year survival > 65% can be expected following pediatric heart transplantation. Morbidity other than hyperten...
